Q: What is the recommended time period between 2 contrast related studies to avoid contrast induced nephropathy?

Answer: Ideally about 5 days

If multiple studies are needed, ideally 5 days should be kept between the studies to allow the kidneys to recover fully from the contrast.

Other steps should be taken like
  • all nephrotoxic drugs should be discontinued,
  • the minimal amount of contrast material should be used,
  • nonionic agents should be preferred,
  • patients should be well hydrated 12 hours before and 2 hours after a contrast-enhanced study.
